America was founded by immigrants who wanted the best out of life and sought the blessings of individual freedom, economic opportunity and protection of their lives, liberty and property. Already established Americans often looked on them with suspicion because they spoke different languages, belonged to religions that seemed irrational or authoritarian, and came from lands without republican institutions. Yet these immigrants accepted the value of tolerance and added to this pluralist, prosperous and free country.
Many Americans today fear immigrants who are from the Middle East or are Muslims since the most virulent political disease in the world today - radical Islam - stems from that region and proclaims that religion. Are these immigrants enemies within who sympathize with or support terrorists? Or are they becoming true Americans who will strengthen this country and help spread freedom to their native lands and coreligionists?
