The Fall and Rise of Long Term Care
Stephen Moses
Americans are living longer but dying slower, often in
expensive and undesirable nursing homes. Since 1965 the government,
through Medicare and Medicaid, encouraged nursing home care and
inhibited the private market for home and community-based long-term
care. The effect was devastating. But private,
market-driven alternatives have recently sprung up. Stephen Moses
will explain how the history of long-term care exemplifies
and underscores Objectivist principles. Stephen Moses is President
of the Center for Long-Term Care Financing in Seattle, Washington.
The Center promotes universal access to top-quality long-term care
by encouraging private financing and discouraging welfare financing of
long-term care for most Americans.
