Advanced Seminar in Objectivist Studies
The third annual meeting of the Advanced Seminar in Objectivist Studies will take place at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown from June 27 to June 29, immediately preceding the TOC Summer Seminar. The Advanced Seminar is a conference where advanced students and scholars meet to discuss new scholarly work being prepared for publication. It offers participants the opportunity to take part in the exciting work being done at the frontiers of Objectivist theory and to hone their skills of philosophical analysis and argument.

Papers to be presented at the conference are distributed in advance to all participants; conference sessions themselves are devoted to critical discussion of the papers and responses from their authors. (Papers will be selected for the program in mid-February, and announced on the TOC Web site and in Navigator.)

The Advanced Seminar is offered free of charge to qualified students and those presenting papers. Non-student participants pay only the cost of room and board for the three nights of the seminar. Admission is limited to qualified students and scholars in order to permit productive discussion. Applicants should possess a systematic understanding of Objectivism and a professional interest in developing and applying objective methods of philosophic analysis. Participants will be expected to prepare for the Seminar by reading the seminar papers in advance.

Seminar for Artists with Michael Newberry
The seminar will consist of four three-hour drawing sessions, alternating between Still-life and Life Drawing (drawing from a live, unclothed model). Artists on all levels from enthusiast to professional are welcome to attend. The course will introduce and stress technical fundamentals, such as form, composition, color theory, and expression. Mr. Newberry will guide the students on how to begin a drawing, what to look for, and how to avoid common errors; he will also demonstrate how problems on even high levels of execution are caused by some disregard for fundamentals.

Michael Newberry exhibits internationally and his works are in private collections throughout the world. He has lectured on aesthetics, given seminars for artists, and taught at Otis/Parsons College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. In 1999 he was interviewed in Navigator and seen on CNN International's The Art Club. Some examples of his work can be seen on the web site www.MichaelNewberry.com. He resides on the isle of Rhodes in Greece.

The Seminar for Artists will begin at 9 am on Friday, June 29 and will run through Saturday, June 30. There is an additional fee for this Seminar. The extra fee includes a Dormitory room for Thursday and Friday and board for Friday and Saturday. Participants must supply their own art supplies. Required: Paper (white shades, semi-textured), various pencils (2Bs-6Bs, soft) or charcoal pencils, kneaded eraser, and a pencil sharpener/knife. Optional: Soft pastels (of the Rembrandt variety and at least 12 varieties of colors) and dark colored paper. Small canvases or canvas covered panels, brushes and acrylic paints (black, white, ochre, yellow, orange, red, purple, brilliant or sky blue, and blue ultramarine). Oils are not recommended, because of the limited time.
