Writing to Persuade (two sessions)

—Susan McCloskey, Ph.D.

Course Description:

If a mind is a terrible thing to waste, it is also a difficult thing to change. Human beings have addressed this difficulty by inventing rhetoric, the art of using words to move readers to embrace the writer’s ideas. This workshop will focus on the principles and practice of successful persuasion: creating a compelling argument, appealing to the reader’s emotions, and inspiring the reader’s confidence in the writer’s moral character. The workshop is open by application to those who write or wish to write persuasively, and is limited to 20 people. Susan McCloskey is president of McCloskey Writing Consultants and an experienced writer, editor, and teacher of writing. Each session is two-hours long. Applications are no longer being accepted.
