2004 Summer Seminar
University of British Columbia, July 3 - July 10

Art as Spiritual Experience

—Alexandra York

Course Description:

People who hold reason as absolute may think that spiritual experiences are something they can do without, but in this lecture Alexandra York will explain how all of us actually need these emotionally exquisite moments of inner joy as vital nourishment for our very souls. She will define secular, rational spirituality in principle and focus, in particular, on the visual arts as bountiful opportunities to stimulate spiritual experiences. She will also offer mental mindsets and step-by-step practical guidelines as to how to seek out your own highly individual art experiences of the spirit. July 4th is a "holy-da" for lovers of freedom, so art that embodies the ideas of this celebration of independence is spiritual in the highest sense, and it will be featured.

Alexandra York is an internationally published author of books, magazine and newspaper articles, book and movie reviews, poetry, and essays, her work appearing in publications such as Reader’s Digest, Vogue, USA Today, The Intellectual Activist, Imprimis, Vital Speeches, and the Book-of-the-Month Club. Former editor of ART Ideas, she is founding president of American Renaissance for the Twenty-first Century (ART), a New-York-based nonprofit arts foundation. York is the author of FROM THE FOUNTAINHEAD TO THE FUTURE and Other Essays on Art and Excellence.
