Internships and Fellowships at The Objectivist Center

2004 Summer Internship application deadline: April 9, 2004.

The Objectivist Center offers internships and occasional visiting fellowships for students, scholars, and activists to work on writing projects at our offices in Poughkeepsie, New York or in certain circumstances at our office in Washington, D.C. This year, we are able to offer one paid 10-12 week internship position. In addition, unpaid internship applications and fellowship project ideas will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Summer internships provide students with training in writing on Objectivist themes. Interns work in TOC's Research and Advocacy division, and may work on journalistic and advocacy pieces or on philosophical pieces depending on their aptitudes and interests and on TOC's current needs. Interns in the past have worked on a range of projects, including scholarly essays, op-eds , cultural commentaries and book reviews for our magazine Navigator, and FAQ entries about Objectivism for our website. Interns may also do some work on general office projects and help out at the Summer Seminar. Interns usually commit to at least 10 weeks in Poughkeepsie working closely with TOC staff.

The strongest candidates will have good writing skills, a strong commitment to advancing Objectivism (including a solid understanding of Objectivist principles), and the ability to work on extended projects independently. Paid interns receive a stipend of $1000 per month and scholarships to attend relevant TOC events such as the Summer Seminar, Advanced Seminar, and/or Graduate Seminar. Unpaid interns receive no financial support except scholarships to attend relevant TOC events. Interns will need to arrange their own housing in Poughkeepsie.

To apply for an internship, send a letter or email to William Thomas at TOC. Please inform us of your name, age, postal and email addresses, and telephone numbers. In addition, please also provide the following information:

1.Your occupation and place of study or work.

2. An outline of your formal educational background, including your academic training in philosophy and any degrees in progress.

3. Your familiarity with Objectivism, including the major works you have read and courses you have taken. Would you describe your own outlook as essentially Objectivist in character?

4. Your writing experience. Include scholarly writing, journalism, fiction writing, etc. Please give us a brief list (no more than ten), starting with the works you deem most significant. Please give bibliographic information for your published work.

5. Your long-term career plans.

6. When would you expect to begin and finish your internship or fellowship?

7. A sample of your writing, 3-10 pages length. We prefer popular or journalistic pieces, but if you have none, an academic paper is acceptable.

Applications for Summer 2004 internships must be received by April 9, 2004. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance no later than April 23.
